"We have a great former council member who is running for the South Maui's council seat this year. Wayne Nishiki has a proven record of advocating for smart growth, smart planning, caring for our oceans and our precious, fragile environment.

We are fortunate that he is willing to take this tough job of councilperson again. He was always standing up against these big-money corporations that seem to think they own this island.

He had a strict policy about not meeting with anyone behind closed doors, stating that any big decisions should be made before the public.

He does not take any campaign contributions from big developers, unlike some of the other candidates who do and then feel obligated to their contributors when big planning decisions need to be made.

Let's get out and vote Nov. 4 and support Wayne Nishiki, who has proven that he has Maui's best interest in mind and not the best interests of the few.

Maui can't afford to have people sitting on the council who are willing to compromise the beauty and the lifestyle of the place we love. Enough damage has been done."

"Vote Wayne Nishiki who wants to create jobs via infrastructure, medical facilities, reservoirs and affordable housing bond issues instead of selling off our future for poorly planned developments that make our lives unlivable."

Maui is in crisis. Jobs will be my number one priority. We need to keep tourism as healthy as possible while diversifying our job base. There are quick ways to help such as increased public spending on infrastructure and on affordable housing. There are long term ways to help such as increasing our on-island four year college programs in order to attract high tech businesses.

We need to help people survive through this slowdown by growing more food locally, creating more farmers markets, allocating community gardens, passing low cost loan programs for individual solar and wind systems to bring down utility bills.  But most of all we need an aggressive program to create jobs for our residents.

We need to take every step possible immediately to help out our residents who are facing unemployment, who can't pay their rent or mortgages, and who are being battered by high gas and electric costs.

Check out my opponents' contributors including

"Wayne Nishiki is a longtime community leader who has been fearlessly committed to a high quality of life for Maui's working people and to honesty and integrity in government.

Maui needs leaders like Nishiki who have integrity and consistency. "
